Week 2 of the Sports Kickback Michigan High School Rankings brings early-season chaos, breakout stars, and statement wins across every corner of the state. From East Lansing’s dominant start to Detroit King fighting to stay in the Top 10 conversation, the landscape is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory.
Below is our updated Top 10, followed by the team sitting just outside the pack at No. 11.
1. East Lansing (Record: 3–0)
East Lansing retains the top spot after another impressive undefeated week. Senior guard KJ Torbert has been nothing short of spectacular, filling the stat sheet with scoring spurts, tough finishes, and elite playmaking. Junior guard Kingston Thomas continues to provide versatility on both ends, giving the Trojans the perfect backcourt balance. With strong team defense and a proven winning culture, East Lansing again looks like a legitimate contender for a deep postseason run.
2. Brother Rice (Record: 2–0)
Brother Rice jumps to No. 2 after picking up two strong wins to start their season. Freshman phenom Jordan MacDonald has already turned heads statewide with poise beyond his age. Senior Trevon Smith has been a stabilizing force, using his experience and leadership to guide a talented roster. The Warriors look deep, disciplined, and dangerous—exactly what you'd expect from a program built on championships.
3. Kalamazoo Central (Record: 2–0)
The Maroon Giants rise to No. 3 thanks to big-time performances from their star duo. Senior forward Isaiah Theodile has been dominant in the paint, while senior guard Taveon Vaughn continues to be one of the most dynamic scorers in the SMAC. With excellent balance across all five positions like Kam Bean, Johnny Edwards, TJ Terrentine, and Kentucky transfer Davier White, Kalamazoo Central is showing early signs of being a top-tier threat in the state.
4. Rockford (Record: 3–0)
Rockford’s deep rotation and physical style have propelled them to an undefeated start. Senior guard Jake Bascom is already playing like one of the top two-way guards in Michigan this season. Junior wing Eli Wolfe is emerging as a breakout contributor, giving Rockford multiple scoring options. Expect the Rams to continue trending upward as their schedule stiffens in the coming weeks.
5. Muskegon (Record: 0–0)
Muskegon season starts this week so they remains in the Top 5. Senior guard James Martin, one of the top all-around guards in the state, continues to put up impressive scoring numbers. Senior A.Petty brings athleticism, energy, and defensive toughness. The Big Reds have the pieces to climb even higher if they tighten up late-game execution.
6. Wayne Memorial (Record: 3–0)
Wayne Memorial cracks the Top 6 after a flawless undefeated start. Senior guard Jalohn Allen sets the tone with his scoring ability and aggressive playmaking. Senior forward Cyrus Goins provides consistent production inside. The Zebras are long, athletic, and extremely fast in transition—making them a nightmare matchup for most teams.
7. Lansing Waverly (Record: 2–0)
Waverly moves up a spot to No. 7 after defeating Detroit King in week 1. A hot start behind one of the state’s most underrated teams. Senior forward Xavier Pendergrass is a skilled scorer with deep shooting range, and senior guard Derek Thomas gives the Warriors a high-IQ playmaker who makes everyone better, he also scored his 1000 points last week. Their chemistry has been excellent early, and their schedule ahead gives them plenty of opportunities to climb.
8. Grand Blanc (Record: 2–0)
The Bobcats slide into the Top 10 thanks to the emergence of their young core. Sophomore Emmanuel Cooley is becoming a strong scoring option, while sophomore Max O’Mara continues to impress with his versatility and confidence. Grand Blanc is young, but their upside is as high as anyone’s in Michigan.
9. Warren Fitzgerald (Record: 2–0)
Fitzgerald enters the rankings this week with a strong undefeated start. Senior forward Keandre Burtin and guard Marcellus Phelps form one of the most explosive duos in southeast Michigan. Their ability to create turnovers and score in transition has been the difference early on. If Fitzgerald continues this level of play, they could be the season’s biggest sleeper.
10. Avondale (Record: 3–0)
Avondale rounds out the Top 10 after a gritty start to the season. Senior guard Jakobe Louris has delivered big-time scoring, and senior Jai’don Bourgeois gives the team toughness and reliability on both ends. Avondale’s physicality and backcourt leadership keep them dangerous against any opponent.
11. Detroit King (Record: 1–1) – On the Border
Detroit King sits just outside the Top 10 as they try to find early-season consistency after a tuff loss to Lansing Waverly. Senior forward RJ Chapman remains one of the most solid players in the state, and junior forward Tyler Hunter provides a much-needed big body and scoring. King has the talent to re-enter the top 10 rankings quickly—execution and chemistry will determine how soon.
