Michigan High School Boys Basketball – Week of 12/29/25
Updated Team Rankings & Season Recaps
The first half of the 2025-26 Michigan high school basketball season has delivered excitement across the state, with marquee programs asserting themselves early and positioning for deep postseason runs. Below is a team-by-team look at the current rankings and recent performances.
1️⃣ East Lansing
East Lansing remains the No. 1 team in the state, riding an undefeated start to the season. The Trojans are 8-0 with conference wins and strong non-conference showings. East Lansing’s recent win over Waverly (74-62) showcased their balanced scoring and defensive discipline, and they also paced a 62-41 victory over Brother Rice at the Motor City Roundball Classic. Senior leadership and consistent performances from stars like K.J. Torbert and Kingston Thomas have kept East Lansing atop the rankings.
Season Highlight: Big wins over Lansing Sexton (73-58) and Brother Rice (62-41) have given East Lansing momentum leading into holiday events.
2️⃣ Rockford
Rockford has been one of the more exciting teams in the state this season, highlighted by a double-overtime win vs. #2 Brother Rice (81-78) at the D Zone Classic. The Rams are proving they can compete at the highest level, blending size and perimeter scoring with a tough in-game mentality. Rockford’s ability to win clutch games bolsters their second-place ranking and momentum in the Ottawa-Kent Conference.
3️⃣ Kalamazoo Central
The Maroon Giants sit at 4-0 on the season and are undefeated in conference play. Kalamazoo Central’s recent results include a dominant 78-34 win over Richland Gull Lake, evidencing their scoring depth and athleticism on both ends of the floor. As conference play ramps up, Kalamazoo Central looks poised to challenge for district and regional titles with a balanced roster and physical interior play.
4️⃣ Brother Rice
Brother Rice has showed they can compete with anyone in the state of Michigan. Despite losing to #1 East Lansing 12/28/25 and vs. #2 Rockford – a tough double-OT loss – showed their competitive toughness even in defeat. The Warriors continue to work through a demanding schedule and remain in the Top 5 thanks to their scoring ability and mixture of youth-veteran leadership.
5️⃣ Muskegon
The Big Reds have built early success around tough defense and rebounding. Muskegon picked up quality wins including a 71-49 triumph over Marquette on December 12 and consistently grind out results in the competitive West Michigan region. Their experience and senior leadership make them a team to watch as January approaches.
6️⃣ Wayne Memorial
Wayne Memorial is off to a strong start with decisive victories in league play (including wins over Redford Union and Livonia Churchill). The Hermits have shown they can score in bunches while limiting opponents’ transition opportunities. Repeating as a district power and advancing in the postseason bracket are realistic goals if they maintain their offensive balance.
7️⃣ Grand Blanc
Grand Blanc continues to rise with an undefeated record through December. Multiple road wins and strong defensive outings have helped them maintain momentum. Regular offense and versatile scoring threats keep them a threat in the Saginaw Valley League and beyond.
8️⃣ Avondale
Avondale’s offense has looked sharp this season, with strong performances in early December games including a 72-28 win over Detroit University Prep. Their scoring efficiency and perimeter shooting make them tough to defend, and they are positioning themselves for significant league contests as the calendar turns.
9️⃣ Waverly
Waverly has had an up-and-down December, including a big 95-64 win over Lansing Everett and a holiday loss to East Lansing (74-62). The Warriors are athletic and capable of high offensive outputs, but consistency will be key as they navigate league play and tournaments.
🔟 Hudsonville
Hudsonville has shown flashes of potential and will look to build on a balanced roster. As a smaller program in the Ottawa-Kent area, they grind out wins and are capable of pulling off upsets in tightly contested games. Coaching adjustments later in the season could push them deeper into district tournament contention.
📍 11 East Kentwood (On the Border)
East Kentwood rounds out the rankings as a team on the rise. Recent results show competitive play against strong schedules, and they’ve benefited from a balanced attack and disciplined defensive schemes. If they continue to develop chemistry and execute, they could break back into the Top 10 in early 2026.
Outlook & What’s Next
As we move past winter break and into conference play, these rankings are likely to continue evolving.
